I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Leadership Austin Essentials program. This nine-month journey brought together a diverse group of professionals, all committed to creating a better Central Texas.

Essentials isn’t your typical leadership course. It’s a space where established leaders from business, government, education, nonprofits, and the arts come together to dig deep into the issues that affect our region. We didn’t just sit through presentations. We had real, honest conversations about equity, systems, and how to lead with courage and purpose.

Each session challenged me to think in a different way. We explored the inner workings of local government, discussed public education, examined economic development, and explored the role of the arts in shaping culture. We looked at big-picture systems, but also reflected on our personal leadership styles and how we show up for others.

One of the most powerful parts of the experience was the people. I built strong connections with other leaders who share my passion for making a positive impact in their communities. These relationships, rooted in vulnerability, curiosity, and shared purpose, are what truly make the program special

Leadership Austin lives by its values: relationships, equity, and learning. Those aren’t just words; they show up in every part of the program. I left with a deeper understanding of the challenges we face as a region, but more importantly, I left feeling equipped and inspired to take action.

As part of our Leadership Austin Essentials class project, our cohort came together in April for an empathy moment that took us beyond the classroom and into the fields, literally.

We volunteered with Urban Roots, a local organization that empowers youth through food and farming. Together with their incredible youth leaders, we spent the day planting seeds, tending the land, and learning more about what it takes to grow fresh, healthy food for our community.

It was more than just gardening. It was a powerful reminder of the role food plays in building equity and connection. Urban Roots envisions a thriving, sustainable food system led by young people and supported by the broader community. By working side by side with these young leaders, we got a glimpse into that vision and felt the joy and purpose behind their mission.

As a graduate of the Essentials program, I’m part of a growing network of over 3,000 alumni who lead with intention and drive positive change. It’s a community I’m proud to be part of, and one that I know will continue to influence my work, mindset, and commitment to Central Texas.

If you are looking to grow as a leader and connect with others who share a deep passion for this region, I highly recommend Leadership Austin’s Essentials program. It’s not just professional development, it’s personal transformation with a purpose.

Class Project: Advancing Educational Equity in District 1

For our Leadership Austin Essentials class project, our cohort focused on improving access to quality education in District 1, a historically underserved area of Travis County. Our goal was to better understand the systemic barriers affecting students and families—and to explore sustainable solutions that promote equity and long-term impact.

Through community research and conversations with local stakeholders, we examined issues like resource disparities, access to early childhood education, and the need for culturally responsive teaching and support systems. We aimed to propose practical policy recommendations and frameworks that could be used to track and improve educational outcomes in the district.

As part of our final deliverable, we developed an 8-minute presentation to share our findings and recommendations. To help set the stage, I created a short video overview of District 1, highlighting key demographic data and local challenges to give our audience a clear understanding of the community we hoped to uplift.

Our project served as a powerful reminder that real change starts with listening, learning, and engaging deeply with the people most impacted by inequity. It was an opportunity to turn leadership into action—and to advocate for a more just and inclusive education system in Central Texas.

Essentials isn't your typical leadership course. It’s a lab, a dynamic space where systems thinking and storytelling intersect. Alongside an incredibly diverse cohort of leaders representing all sectors, I explored the inner workings of local government, education, economic development, and the arts. Each monthly session peeled back layers of complexity, revealing opportunities to better understand and engage with our community’s most pressing challenges.
