HAL isn’t just a leadership program; it’s a proving ground for visionaries, collaborators, and community advocates. I’m honored to share a glimpse into this enriching experience that shaped my perspective and deepened my commitment to service.
Breaking Barriers Through Storytelling and Access
A signature element of HAL is the cohort-driven community impact project. Our team chose to tackle a pressing issue: the language barrier that too often hinders civic participation among non-English-speaking residents in Austin. We translated A Beginner’s Guide to Local Government into Spanish—making critical civic knowledge more accessible to a broader audience. My personal contribution involved producing a compelling video to raise awareness around the leadership program and the Spanish-language booklet. Through storytelling, visuals, and a spirit of inclusion, we worked to ensure that everyone has a clearer path to understanding and engaging with their local government. This Spanish version will soon be available through the Austin Common.
HAL’s Legacy and Vision
Established in 1999, HAL is recognized as one of the top seven Hispanic leadership programs in the country, generating a multi-million dollar economic impact in Central Texas. Rooted in the belief that leadership is most powerful when guided by empathy, knowledge, and collaboration, HAL offers a curriculum spanning the following sectors:
Healthcare
Environmental Sustainability
Civic Engagement
Finance
Arts & Culture
Education
Technology
Through interdisciplinary sessions and real-world projects, HAL equips leaders with both insight and tools to make tangible change.
Grateful for the Journey Ahead
HAL empowered me to refine my leadership style, expand my professional network, and participate in meaningful projects that leave a lasting impact. As I move forward, I carry with me not only new skills but also deeper connections and a renewed sense of purpose.
To the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, my HAL cohort, and the communities we served, thank you for making this experience one of growth, impact, and hea
A Recognition That Reflects Community Impact
One of the most humbling moments of my HAL journey occurred during our graduation ceremony, when my peers presented me with the Guillermo Calderon Leadership Award. This honor celebrates participants who exemplify leadership, collaboration, and civic spirit throughout the program. Receiving this award from such an inspiring cohort was a powerful affirmation, not just of the work we did together, but of the passion I poured into every step of the journey.
